People come to All Wellness in Burlington for many reasons: to get fit, to lose weight, to regain flexibility, to get a massage, etc. Many of our clients and friends are looking to boost their weight-loss efforts. Everything from physical therapy to hypnotherapy can help with weight loss, but we’ve been asked which is the biggest loser: Zumba or Pilates?
This question comes most often from Pilates practitioners who have not yet tried Zumba. Zumba fans already know that Zumba is the biggest loser in Burlington. But the real answer is: It depends. It depends on your diet, the intensity of your practice, on your body weight and on your current fitness level. To lose 1 pound, you must burn 3500 excess calories. You can do this any number of ways…Gradually is the best way to lose weight, through a combination of good nutrition and appropriate exercise. Zumba can give you the kick you need to get started.
A Zumba group on FaceBook recently did a poll of Zumba fanatics (people who practice Zumba 3 or more times a week) to see how effective Zumba is for weight loss. The answer is very effective! Here is a sample of responses:
“I lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks.”
“I lost 10 pounds and a total of about 8 inches in the past 8 weeks.”
“In the past four weeks doing Zumba 5-6 days a week, I’ve lost 8-1/4 inches overall. Zumba rocks!!”
“I started Zumba back in February and I have lost 80lbs.”
Pilates is a different animal, entirely. According to Livestrong.com, a 150-lb. person will burn about 238 calories in a one-hour Pilates session. Pilates can certainly aid weight-loss, but the biggest long-term benefit of a consistent Pilates practice overall spinal health. With optimal spinal health and the mindful movement strategies that comprise Pilates, you’ll be able to engage in all of the important activities in your life.
If one of those activities happens to be Zumba, all the more fun! Especially this week when Zumba classes are free on July 6th and 7th (6:15-7:15 pm)! Zumba is on the new schedule at the All Wellness fitness room on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:15-7:15pm.
