Fabulous Fridays theme Secret Agent: Atman

Fabulous Fridays is a pretty unique yoga class. It happens once a month (March 29th this time around). Each class has a specific theme and students are asked to submit their favorite relevant songs. John McConnell combines these requests into a kind of ultimate yoga playlist – each of us gets to hear a favorite song as we bust a move on our mats. I have not seen anything like it here in Vermont. It is a kind of funky-get-down-boogie-wild-dance-party-celebration that combines a vigorous asana practice (2-hours) with the true meaning of yoga.

The true meaning of yoga doesn’t have to be a serious, heavy, philosophical endeavor. Sri Aurobindo defines it this way: “a turning of the human soul from the egoistic state of consciousness… to a higher state in which the Transcendent and Universal can pour itself into the individual mould and transform it.”

Can you think of anything you’d rather ‘turn your human soul’ to other than yoga and your favorite music? Neither can I.

The theme for this month is Secret Agent. When John announced the theme for this month’s Fabulous Fridays class, some people thought he might be the Secret Agent. Others wondered if it could possibly be Daniel Craig (pretty please?) . People of a certain age called out for Sean Connery (classic Bond).

Fortunately we don’t have to wait for a great yoga teacher or a hunky actor in order to find our own Secret Agent. The true Secret Agent is within each of us. It is Atman, the Self; pure consciousness. Atman is the essence of the divine in ourselves that we strive to uncover each time we practice yoga. Some call it the eternal soul and say that it is unchanging and indistinguishable from the essence of the universe.

Give Fabulous Fridays a go. Let the Transcendent and Universal pour into your soul or just enjoy the music. Either way, you’ll have a blast.
